U.S. v Georgia Settlement “The Georgia Supportive Housing Association commends the parties to US v Georgia for reaching a settlement of the civil rights issues involved in the case. This settlement is a giant step toward the transformation of the mental health system of the state, which has for many years relied on institutions to meet the needs of persons with disabilities. The commitments made in this agreement will make it possible for people with mental illness who have for years rotated through jails, prisons, hospitals, and shelters to find new stable lives in housing in our communities. The Settlement recognizes that supportive housing works and commits the state to providing the resources needed to produce the number of units that it will need over the next five years. We commend Governor Nathan Deal for his implementation of the settlement plan. The Supportive Housing Association of Georgia advocates for public policies and appropriation of funds that will expand supportive housing availability in the state.

VISION

Its advocacy is founded on the belief that affordable housing connected to quality services will enable persons with disabilities who are homeless or institutionalized to achieve greater stability and independence. It believes that supportive housing is more cost effective for state and local tax payers than the cost of jails, hospital emergency rooms, long term institutions, and shelters.
